Young-jun Yoo / Assignment 7 / Tue3,4

How many hours do you work a week? As technologies have developed more and more, our lifestyle has become more convenient and efficient. Especially, timesaving devices save us labor as well as time. Nonetheless, people today are working harder and longer. I believe this irony is wrong and people should work less and have more leisure time for three reasons -- work efficiency, health and the meaning of life.

First, if you don't have enough leisure time, it will harm the efficiency at work. Hardworking may result in high work efficiency, but overworking and not having a proper rest will lead to low efficiency and productivity. For example, imagine that you are cramming all night for an exam next day. You probably will feel you're losing concentration and your brain is starting to not work well as the night goes by. If you studied the same thing for three days, it would take you much less time and trouble in total.

Second, it would damage your health physically and mentally. People nowadays are working under a lot of pressure and stresses, especially in service sector jobs. They have to deal with picky customers in most of their working hours to satisfy them. This kind of emotional labor causes a lot of stresses which should be resolved as soon as possible. The important thing here is that they should have more leisure time to relieve those stresses.

Finally, your life would be less meaningful if you more focus on working rather than enjoying your life. It seems to me that many people work hard struggling to earn as much money as possible only to prepare for their later years. Of course, we should prepare our future so life savings are an important part. But, life is long. We should know how to enjoy our life as well; for example, lifelong hobbies.

In conclusion, I believe we should spend more time for leisure and less time for work than now. It will make your life better. Keep yourself healthy and enjoy now. If you don't, you will regret it when you are old. Time never returns.
