Hannah Bae/Classification Essay/Tue 11am

Imagine you’re in an international forum where a lot of people from diverse countries are. When the speaker begins to talk, some people simultaneously convert it into another language and deliver through headphones. That person is the interpreter. In these days of globalization, the role of interpreters is getting more important. There are three abilities you need to be a good interpreter.

First, the most important thing is language ability. To be an interpreter, you should perform at least two languages. One is your mother tongue and the other is your second language. In most case, the second language is English. You must be able to speak in those two languages freely. The nuances, structures, expressions in each language are those you need to know. Also, you should acknowledge the differences between those two languages. Because you are a foreigner, knowing the natural expressions in another language is really hard, so you should keep learning.

The next thing you should posses is cultural backgrounds. There are many words we cannot understand without sufficient cultural backgrounds. For example, Hanbok or Seollal in Korea. You cannot just google the word you don’t know at the spot. The traditions and the history of the country of your second language should be in your head already. Going to that country and experiencing the culture on your own is the best way. However, if you can’t do it, there are other ways such as watching dramas. Many traditional things appear in a drama and you can get to know what it is without direct experiences.

The last important thing is curiosity about the world. The world is changing rapidly and a lot of news emerges every day. The subject addressed in the forums is usually recent and international one so you should keep your eyes on and be all ears to what’s going on throughout the world. The useful and easy way is reading a newspaper or watching news on TV. Not only national but also watch the worldwide news and newspapers. It will help you to keep up with the international situations.

To sum up, you need to be fluent in at least two languages, have a wide knowledge of culture in those languages, and curios about the world situations. Though it may seem a little bit difficult, it will help you to be a good interpreter. Keep trying and make your dream come true.

  1. To Hannah Bae, From Saewhan Park

    1. What I like about this piece of writing is that it is clearly organized based on your three arguments. It is also easy to follow with many transition verbs.

    2. Your main point seems to be things that I need to become a good interpreter like fluency, wide knowledge of culture. and curiosity about the world situations.

    3. These particular words or lines struck me as powerful:
"The world is changing rapidly and a lot of news emerges every day."

I wondered why you mentioned the curiosity about the world, and now it makes sense with this sentence. Since the world is changing, interpreters should be familiar with many issues so that he or she can interpret well.

    4. "Imagine you’re in an international forum where a lot of people from diverse countries are."

I think there is a grammar mistake here. "where there are a lot of people." is a correct form.

    5. I think it would be better if you give more explanations in the conclusion paragraph why you need to be fluent, have a wide knowledge of culture, and so on.
