argumentative essay

Why should we ban illegal downloading?

20110423 Eun Hye Jang

Let's suppose that you are a movie director and want to make a good movie. You spend a lot of days and nights designing the movie. Sometimes you cry agonizing over how to develop the story and deliver your message. After a while you finally complete your movie. Then many people take your movie for granted, don't appreciate your efforts, and even don't pay for the ticket for your movie just downloading the movie online for free. Can you consider this situation as justifiable? Nobody can accept it. We have to forbid illegal downloading on internet.

We can realize a just society by banning illegal downloading on internet. When fair rewards are given to people who contribute value creating, social justice can be realized. As all workers get paid for their time and energy, movie directors are qualified to get paid according to their efforts and deserve it. We should appreciate their efforts and buy the tickets for fair price as a token of social justice.

For the development of a movie industry, we should make directors concentrate only on their movies rather than on how to protect their products from being illegally downloaded. It's because the more focused they are on their creation, the better movie we can enjoy. Many a campaign is run on air in order to appeal to people and stop illegal downloads. Movie directors should not be led to spend their time brainstorming over ideas of such campaigns, but rather to a movie set and put all their attention to their movie. It only occurs when we guarantee them that their product is protected.

Most movie pirates insist that a movie costs too much beyond their budget. They say they have no choice but to download movies illegally on internet. The cost of less than a tenth or even for free is surely a tempting lure for people who hardly keep their ends meet. However, if we do not pay the movie producers for their creation, they may not be able to produce any movie or produce at best a low quality movie due to the lack of their budget.

When we prohibit illegal downloading, we protect our right to enjoy our culture, movies. What quality of movie we can see depends on how much we are willing to pay. If we spend a dollar for a movie, we will end up watching one worth such amount. It is because we allow movie directors just the amount of budget for a movie of such quality. If we do not ban illegal downloading, we may lose movie producers and eventually movies themselves.

1. What I like about this piece of writing is the
hook and introduction paragraph. You used an eye-catching hook. And you didn't use sequence connectors (first, secondly..). I used them in my writing because I felt like I had to, I like your writing better without those connectors somehow.

    2. Your main point seems that we should ban illegal downloading.

3. These particular words or lines struck me as powerful:

    Words or lines:
The cost of less than a tenth or even for free is surely a tempting lure for people who hardly keep their ends meet.

    I like them because:

I like you wrote "tempting lure." it really shows the sentiment.

    4. Some things aren't clear to me.

"Movie directors should not be led to spend their time brainstorming over ideas of such campaigns"

Not quite sure what you meant by "campaigns?" Perhaps you could paraphrase it into something clearer.

5. The one change you could make that would make the biggest improvement in this piece of writing is that : Your refutation could be more logical and persuasive.

    1. What I like about this piece of writing is your easy and persuasive introduction.

    2. Your main point seems to be that sharing movies should be banned in order to encourage creativity.

    3. These particular words or lines struck me as powerful:
If we spend a dollar for a movie, we will end up watching one worth such amount.
    (Conclusion)

    4. Some things aren’t clear to me. These lines or parts could be improved (meaning not clear, supporting points missing, order seems mixed up, writing not lively):
In many phrases, the third paragraph seems repeated the second one. In this paragraph, you'd better introduce the other opinions.

    5. The one change you could make that would make the biggest improvement in this piece of writing is your concession(fourth paragraph). If it was more stronger, it would be better. The part you introduces the counter opinion was good enough, but it seems your logic against to it is not fully developed.

Let’s suppose that you are a movie director and want to make a good movie. You spend a lot of days and nights designing the movie. Most movie pirates insist that a movie costs too much beyond their budget. Also, they say that it is more comfortable to watch downloaded movies at home than to watch movies at theater. These reasons make sense in some ways. It is very inviting to watch downloaded movies at home without regard to time and cost. However, the law prohibits illegal downloading under the name of copyright. We have to obey the law in order to maintenance of order in society. If we downloaded movies illegally on the internet, it would mean that not only we disturb the law but also we may be punished.

So we should ban illegal downloading.
