MinSoo Lee / Timed Essay / Tues11am

With the development of new technologies, we were able to live more convenient life. People keep on trying to develop and invent new technology which may be handy and timesaving. However, there is unsolved problem which is getting bigger as we are becoming to be more developed. Despite of inventions of timesaving technologies, why are we having lesser leisure time but work longer than before?

The prime cause of this phenomenon is on the competitive society. In the modern world, there are many competitions among people because they want to be successful than each other. We may not realize but this phenomenon begins from earlier stage of life. For instance, even if we reach the age of toddler, we feel jealous and eager to have better thing or be better than others. Being better or to be successful than others require great amount of effort and time. So spending more time on work and less time on leisure is cost that people have to take. Though, people often forget about the fact that proper amount of leisure will bring better outcome.

First of all, right amount of leisure time will able us to work more efficiently. Working on a project or learning some new things requires lots of time and we get lots of stresses out of them. If we overwork about something, eventually we will meet a dead end where tremendous stresses block us from working or learning. We can simply consider our brain as a machine. So as machines break down when they are overworked, our brains will stop functioning as well as before they had leisure time. Leisure time is compulsory component to make the most efficient outcome.

In addition, we will be more willing to do our work once we had our leisure time.  Today, companies force their employees to finish their work until a certain deadline. However, those deadlines are hardly sufficient. In most cases, deadlines are pretty short so people are forced to stay up late and do their task. How many people in the world would volunteer to stay up late and work? Probably more people would just go to bed early than to volunteer to stay up late and work. When people are given enough time to work and also have enough leisure time, they will have greater will to do their work. There are great differences in the quality of our work when we have will and when we don't.

To sum up, having enough leisure time is required to have better work efficiency and will to work. As the society became very competitive, we need to be get along with it. If we want to be better than others, we should be having lesser leisure time than others and work harder. But working is not always the answer. So we should be flexible enough to realize how much leisure time we need and get back to work as soon as possible.
