An youmi/Argumentative essay/Tue 11am

I downloaded two movies, yesterday. I did it without myself feeling guilty. I always do download things whenever it is needed. I know it is basically illegal but I also know even though I download something illegally, police will not burst into my room and arrest me. Probably this is why illegal downloading is still done by many people. The voice for protecting intellectual property in film industry gets bigger and bigger. I completely agree. However, I do not agree the laws which deal with illegal downloading is the answer to solve the problem. It is way better to legalize those illegal downloading than punish everyone who breaks the law.

It is too much costly and inefficient to punish each and everyone who breaks the laws. Filing charges against everyone who breaks the law is almost impossible since an innumerate number of people are doing it even for this moment. This is why even when the crackdown on illegal downloading is getting intense here in Korea, people is still doing it without feeling scared or guilty. People know that it does not cover every illegal downloading. Sometimes the cases of punishing illegal downloading have been reported, but people feel that those are what happen to only unlucky few. The law is valid but not feasible and helpful to solve the problem.

Also, charging everyone for downloading films at home not going to a video rental shop does not make much sense. These days many culture contents are made and sold through online software market. Films should have been one of them. We are living in the world where a click or two on the Internet is enough to do what we want to do. What do we spare the infinite virtual market on the Internet for? It does not make sense if driving to an out-dated video rental shop is the only legal way to watch movies that we want to watch. We need an easily accessible and official place on the Internet where people can pay for watching or downloading films in legal way.

Some could say people will not want to pay money and download films legally even if there is any way to do it. However, people download file illegally not only because it is for free but also it is convenient. A successful precedent in music industry shows us well that convenience could be a more influential factor for people's downloading illegally. In Korea, many major portal sites offer legal music download service. Since the service began and got generalized in Korea, downloading music illegally has been appreciably decreased. It is not free but people used the service a lot. It tells us that many of those who illegally downloaded music just wanted to buy and own music in a more convenient way. I think this will be true for the case of films.

Films are also one of intellectual properties that should be protected. I agree with that idea. I just argue that legalizing those illegal downloading will be a more feasible solution and it will also make a new profitable market for film industry as it did for music industry. As long as people do not care for the laws, the laws have no power. We need to focus more on the reasons why people download illegally and make more feasible approach than punishing them.

To Youmi An From Jisoo Jung Assignment 5

    1. What I like about this piece of writing is interesting reasons that you suggest and well organized structure. I could read your essay easily and also I could learn more about IP through your paper.

    2. Your main point seems that you disagree the laws which deal with illegal downloading is the answer to solve the problem.

    3. These particular words or lines struck me as powerful:

    1) burst into : it describes the situation lively
    2) break the law : it is important word to show one’s opinion in this writing.

    4. Some things aren’t clear to me. These lines or parts could be improved (meaning not clear, supporting points missing, order seems mixed up, writing not lively):

I could understand the contents without any difficulties.

    5. The one change you could make that would make the biggest improvement in this piece is almost nothing. This paper is really new for me. It contains unique and new perspectives toward downloading. I could learn a lot more about the downloading.

It is too much costly and inefficient to punish each and everyone who breaks the laws - I totally agree with your idea.

    4. Somethings aren't clear to me. I can't clearly understand your point made in the third paragraph. Going to a rental shop is not the only legal resolution. We can still download movies legally via internet.

    5. The one change you could make the biggest improvement in this piece is that little change in your third paragraph may significantly change your writing. The point you suggested in the third paragraph is not clear enough.

What do we spare the infinite virtual market on the Internet for? Despite there are some web sites where people download movies legally, those sites are not famous at all and most of us probably do not know about them. We need an easily accessible and official place on the Internet where people can pay for watching or downloading films in legal way, or we need to actively promote those existing websites.
