Hyejeong Yu / Persuasive Writing / Tue 3&4

Intellectual property (IP) has become important from the start of the information society.  Before the information based society, it was not really a key to success to know a lot of things. But as world changed, information became crucial to rule the society. This information, which is IP, is not really being protected as it became easier to share. IP should be protected for the following three reasons.

First, IP should be protected because if not the right to make fortune from the IP will be gone. Without protecting IP, people would be able to share IP through internet, CD copies and files etc. Then the owner of the IP will not be able to earn money from his creation because people will not buy the property as they can get it with no effort or money. For example, if movies are allowed to be copy freely, no one will go to theater to watch one. Thus, the owner of the movie could not have profit. The same case goes for other intellectual contents such as music, books, or art.

Second, IP should be protected to promote people to produce intellectual contents. The reason why people produce IP contents is to make money out of it. They produce contents for living. However, if IP is not protected and the creators cannot earn money from it, there is not much reason for them to make contents. Therefore, protecting IP can be a way of promoting people to produce well-made intellectual contents.

Some people might say IP do not need to be protected as it is not physical possession. Unlike physical possession, IP is a property that can be shared by everyone. In other words, a same cup cannot be shared by two persons, but IP can. For this reason, some people argue that IP cannot be counted as possession. However, people possess things to make profit or to have the feeling that they own something. Even though IP do not have physical form, it does exactly same functions to human as physical possession does. For example, the owner of the music try to make profit from it and the customers buy the music in the form of CD or MP3 files to have a feeling that they own the content.

In conclusion, the IP should be protected to make sure the owners' rights are secure, and to promote IP creators to produce well-made contents. There might be some that argue IP is not physical because it only exist in imagine. However, IP still needs to be protected because it does same function as physical possession does.

1. What I like about this piece of writing is your conclusion. It restates the three categories and well summarizes the thesis.

2. Your main point seems that IP should be protected.

3. These particular words or lines struck me as powerful:

    Words or lines:
Even though IP do not have physical form, it does exactly same functions to human as physical possession does.

    I like them because:

The sentence seems to state your refutation to the counter-argument. With that just one sentence, the readers can notice what you are really trying to say.

    4. Some things aren't clear to me.
    1) I think that first body paragraph and second are similar. It seems to tell the same story. It would be better for you to put more diverse aspects of protecting IP.

5. The one change you could make that would make the biggest improvement in this piece of writing is that : Actually, I don't get the exact meaning of the third paragraph. Especially, the example. It is quite irrelevant to your main refutation ideas. I think it is not supporting your ideas well.

    3. These particular words or lines struck me as powerful:

    1) promote : it seems more professional
    2) for living : it expresses the situation well.
    3) physical possession : because of this simple word, I can understand contents more easily and can catch the main points.

    4. Some things aren’t clear to me. These lines or parts could be improved (meaning not clear, supporting points missing, order seems mixed up, writing not lively):

information became crucial to rule the society : To me, it is little bit hard to understand the meaning of ruling society.

    5. The one change you could make that would make the biggest improvement in this piece of writing is some expressions. But I don’t want to change them, because it is really well organized writing and I was interested in and good

  3. *Changes I have made in the second draft.
    1) Making the thesis statement clear

    3) Making conclusion clear
    4) Some grammar problems
    5) Trying to give real life examples

Original and creative ideas have become important since the start of the information society. It is now essential to have those ideas in order to success. The outcome from those ideas and the right to claim the possession of the outcome are what we call intellectual property right. In the 21st century, however, the intellectual property right is quite ignored a lot because of the illegal downloading. Intellectual property should be protected from illegal downloading for the following reasons.
First, intellectual property should be protected because it has economical value in it. Intellectual property is the right to claim over one’s creation in art, literary, music, science, and architect etc. These properties might not be visible but have economical values that bring money to people. Without protecting intellectual property right, people would be able to share contents through internet illegally. Then the owner of the IP will not be able to earn money from his creation because people will not buy the property as they can get it with no effort or money. For example, in 2012 high quality DVD file of the movie called ‘건축학 개론’ was released through internet illegally while the movie was on theater, making 7.5 billion loss. Because of this economical value that people rarely aware of; intellectual property should be protected.

Second, the right should be protected to promote people to produce intellectual contents. It is natural for human to have the desire to protect one’s possession and get upset when their properties are in use without permission. The same goes with the intellectual property. People who produce intellectual contents would be discouraged to make contents because their right is not protected from illegal approaches. But if the system protects their rights properly, the creators feel safe to produce contents without the concerning of theft. This will lead to a prosperous culture where is full of creation and imagination. Therefore, protecting intellectual property can be a way of promoting people to produce well-made intellectual contents.

Some people might say intellectual property does not need to be protected as it is not physical possession. Unlike physical possession, it is a property that can be shared by everyone. In other words, a same cup cannot be shared by two persons, but intellectual property can. For this reason, some people argue that intellectual property cannot be counted as possession. However, people possess things to make profit or to have the feeling that they own something. Even though it does not have physical form, it does exactly same functions to human as physical possession does. For example, the owner of the music try to make profit from it and the customers buy the music in the form of CD or MP3 files to have a feeling that they own the content.

In conclusion, the intellectual property should be protected from illegal approaches to make sure the owner’s economical rights are secured and to promote the creators to produce well-made contents. If the society recognize the value of intellectual property and is willing to protect the rights of the owners, the culture and knowledge could develop more.
