Soyun Jeong/ Classification Essay/ Tue 11

Once I read a book written by a professor who teaches at the graduate school of interpretation. According to that book, students who study interpretation often say, "if I studied this hard on other fields, I would have gained several doctor's degrees." As you can probably imagine from this quote, becoming a professional interpreter is such a difficult job. To become a good interpreter, you should have fluent language skill, curiosity, and health.

First and most importantly, interpreters should have good language skill in two or more languages. They should have wide range of vocabulary, and great knowledge in grammar. They also should be able to figure out the implicated nuance in certain word or expression. Especially in the modern society with such rapid changes, lots of vocabularies and expressions are newly produced every day. Therefore, an interpreter should always be updated to this fast development of language.

Second, interpreters should be inquirers who are curious about all the new information they face, and they should enjoy learning. It is because they must be very knowledgeable in almost any field. In order to interpret some speech, interpreters should have thorough background knowledge about the topic, so interpreters often study very hard about the topic before they interpret. The thing is, there are enumerable topics to be interpreted, which means enumerable fields for interpreters to study. Interpreter will be a painful job if you do not have curiosity and willingness to learn something new.

Lastly, interpreters must be healthy. One important reason is that you have to concentrate very hard in order to listen to a speech, remember the message, and convert it to another language all at the same time. Therefore it requires huge amount of mental power. If you are sick or tired, you cannot concentrate hard enough to interpret. Also, because international conferences take hours and hours, an interpreter should have enough stamina to work hard without getting tired for a long time.

You have to try very hard to be a professional interpreter because you need great language ability, passion for learning, and healthy body and mind. However once you gain all of these three, you will become a wonderful bridge that links people from different parts of the world together. Therefore all the efforts you have to take in order to be a professional interpreter will worth it in your life.

    3. These particular words or lines struck me as powerful:

However once you gain all of these three, you will become a wonderful bridge that links people from different parts of the world together.

    I liked the expression "bridge."

    4. Some things aren't clear to me. These lines or parts could be improved(meaning not clear, supporting points missing, order seems mixed up, writing not lively):

Everything was clear to me :)

    5. The one change you could make that would make the biggest improvement in this piece of writing is: I liked your writing but if I had to change anything about it, I would replace the third point with something else because it seems to be less relavant.
