MinSoo Lee/ Classification Essay/ Tues 3,4

Each people have all kinds of abilities which may be helpful for their future career. Although there are no specific ability for a certain career, some abilities are helpful than other abilities. After studying in an English Interpretation and Translation major for over a year, I learnt which abilities are necessary to become a competent interpreter. To become a competent interpreter, we should have wide knowledge, confidence and language skills.

The most important ability necessary for an interpreter is to have a wide knowledge of different fields. Being an interpreter is not all about having good language skills. Many people are talented with language skills but they don't end up being an interpreter because they don't have enough knowledge required for interpretation. We need to be ready to interpret every field of studies by studying them before interpreting. So after realizing the importance of other field's knowledge, I started to prepare harder and learn about the field before I interpret.

In addition, confidence takes great part in interpretation. Lack of confidence will lead your interpretation into misery. During interpretation we should be confident all time even if we don't understand or miss something. As soon as we mumble due to our lack of confidence or whatever the reason is, the audience will start to think suspiciously about our interpretation. We should be brave and have faith in our interpretation. Since my childhood, I had serious problem with my confidence. After I realized that this problem may be critical for my potential career, I practiced to giving speech and voluntarily stand in front of people to speak. Now I have enough confidence to speak in front of people without any problem.

Finally, language skill is not the most important but one of the important abilities required for an interpreter. To become an interpreter, we should be basically talented with language. Interpreter is a career which has great relation with language so if we are not talented with language skills, it may be hard to pursue our career. However, not having talent in language doesn't mean that we can't be an interpreter. I think with a hard work anything may be possible. So I worked on my terrible language skills for the dream of being an interpreter. I worked very hard to catch up with other people who are naturally talented with them.

To summarize, the abilities that we should possess to become an interpreter is having wide knowledge, confidence and language skills. I was not talented with any of them but I worked hard to become better. Those are the important abilities for an interpreter and which I should work harder on.

  2. 1. What I like about this piece of writing is how you structured your paragraphs. For every body paragraph you first talk about what ability is required for interpreters, why do they need it, and what you did to develop your own ability. Because you kept the structure consistently, your piece of writing looked more organized and was a lot easier to understand.

    2. Your main point seems to be “To become a competent interpreter, we should have wide knowledge, confidence and language skills.”

    3. These particular words or lines struck me as powerful:
"As soon as we mumble due to our lack of confidence or whatever the reason is, the audience will start to think suspiciously about our interpretation." This example really made me feel the situation, so it helped me understand the importance of confidence instantly.

    4. In the second and fourth paragraph, you said lanugage is not the most important factor of being an interpreter, but I was confused by those lines because I thought one cannot become a interpreter if he or she is not good in languages.

    5. I thought it would be a lot more interesting if you added what you actually did to develop your abilities to become an interpreter

  3. Each people have all kinds of abilities which may be helpful for their future career. The most important ability necessary for an interpreter is to have a wide knowledge of different fields. Being an interpreter is not all about having good language skills. Many people are talented with language skills but they don’t end up being an interpreter because they don’t have enough knowledge required for interpretation. We need to be ready to interpret every field of studies by studying them before interpreting. Before I knew the importance of knowing other fields, I only thought interpretation was all about the language skills. But we can’t do good interpretation without knowing the field. Language is basic skill required in interpretation and knowledge of wide field is what makes clear interpretation. So after realizing the importance of other field’s knowledge, I started to prepare harder and learn about the field before I interpret.
In addition, confidence takes great part in interpretation. Lack of confidence will lead your interpretation into misery. Now I have enough confidence to speak in front of people without any problem.
Finally, language skill is not the most important but one of the important abilities required for an interpreter. It is the most basic and fundamental skill required in interpretation. To become an interpreter, we should be basically talented with language. Interpreter is a career which has great relation with language so if we are not talented with language skills, it may be hard to pursue our career. However, not having talent in language doesn’t mean that we can’t be an interpreter. I think with a hard work anything may be possible.
