The Abilities Needed for Interpreters

201001709 Jisu Song

What are some important abilities to be a successful interpreter? As an aspiring interpreter, I have been thinking about this matter for 3 years and I have come up with 3 major skills. I have thought about it for quite a long time because if the important skills are something you are born with, I will not succeed as an interpreter. But I discovered that the 3 main skills are the things that I can develop by practice and hard work.

The most important skill to succeed as an interpreter is language skills. Because interpretation is translating something into another language, the interpreter must have good commands of at least 2 languages. He or she must be fluent in every aspect of language: listening, writing, reading, and speaking. Especially, when one reads a text, he or she should read the meanings between the lines. If not, the interpretation's quality will be poor like a result from Google translator.

The second most important skill is how well he or she presents the interpretation. If one understands every message in the source language, but is poor at delivering it into the target language, he or she will never become a successful interpreter. Interpreters' voice should be confident enough to convince the audience even if they are saying something wrong. They should speak and act like the speaker so that people can easily.

The least important ability is knowledge. These days many interpreters act in their own specific fields such as law and IT. But still, many work as freelancers who deal with various aspects of the society. Let's say you have to interpret at an economics conference. Although you are already provided with some economic terms, if you don't know the basics about economics, it will be very difficult to do your job. Therefore, to be a successful interpreter, having knowledge in almost every field is important.

All the skills are important, but to sum up, the most important one is having good commands of languages. The second most important ability is presentation skills because interpretation is dealing with communication. Last but not least, being knowledgeable is also crucial to be a successful interpreter. Also, people who want to be interpreters should always work hard because all these skills can be acquired by practice.

    1. What I like about this piece of writing is your structure. This writing is clear, and there's nothing mixed up or confusing.

    2. Your main point seems that good language skills, efficient way of presenting and enough knowledge are the most important qualifications as an interpreter.

    3. These particular words or lines struck me as powerful:
If not, the interpretation's quality will be poor like a result from Google translator.

This phrase powerfully shows how bad the intepretation could be! haha! :)

    4. Some things aren’t clear to me. These lines or parts could be improved (meaning not clear, supporting points missing, order seems mixed up, writing not lively):

Yur conclusion. It seems you tried to expand your opinion by the last phrase of the conclusion, but I got impression that you stopped writing in middle of the conclusion. It
would be better if you add several phrases explaining the last phrase of the conclusion.

    5. The one change you could make that would make the biggest improvement in this piece of writing is the fourth paragraph(The last paragraph of body part). As far as I learnt from class of EIT, interpreters should be specialized in some fields, but it does not means they have to be aware of almost every fields. Some interpreters are specilized in beauty, fashion, and culture, while others are very into in politics and economics. That parts came vague to me, but except this, this is very well written!

  2. 1.What I like about this peice of writing is your second body paragraph. The topic sentence of the second body paragraph is not that specaial. However, you supported your topic sentence very well.

2.Your main point seems that language skill, skil to present the interpretation, related knowledge are the most important attributes to become a interpreter.

3.These particular words or lines struck me as powerful:
As I said above, I like your second body paragraph.
"Interpreters' voice should be confident enough to convince the audience even if they are saying something wrong." especially, I like this sentence. I have never thought about this.

4.Some things aren’t clear to me. These lines or parts could be improved
They should speak and act like the speaker so that people can easily- You miss your main verb.

5.The one change you could make that would make the biggest improvement in this piece of writing is the introduction paragraph. It seems to be a little boring. If you added some interesting, eye-catching hook, your writing would be perfect!

I am sure most EIT majoring students have thought about how to be a successful interpreter. Interpreters' voice should be confident enough to convince the audience even if they are saying something wrong.
