An youmi/60 minute essay/tue 11am

Today's world put a great emphasis on building careers or achieving something admirable so that an individual can feel fulfilled. People are almost obsessed with the thought that we should have our life story filled with working hard and becoming successful. If we are not that satisfied with our present life even though we had been continuously busy, we need to relax. We need to think about whether our too future-oriented busy lifestyle exhausts us, deprive our life of diversity, and decrease our efficiency in working.

People are busier because of their future-oriented lifestyle. We have a lot of opportunities to learn how to think in advance and prepare for them. Therefore, people get used to focusing on what is going to be after a week, months or years instead of focusing on the present. We always plan ahead. We finish up what we planned to do last week and immediately start off planning what we are going to do next week. Good job. But where is our present? Life is ultimately the succession of innumerate 'nows'. I think in order to reach the true fulfillment we need to know how to cherish our presents. And one of the ways to cherish our presents is take a rest when you want it. Instead of setting to another task for tomorrow having more relaxed and entertaining for now.

People go to work, work hard and come back home. This routine goes on and on. Although nobody wants their life to be the mere accumulation of similar days, most people do not figure out what to do for diversity of our life. There is an extremely easy answer: we can take a rest and have leisure time. Some might say "For diversities, we need not a short vacation spending our time at home but more excited and extraordinary things". However, simply having a resting time between those hard working days makes a lot more differences than people think. You will not miss the sound of a father and a son's catch ball from the next door and remind of your parents if you are just relaxing your body in your front yard instead of doing extra work at home. You will get to know there is an amazing play in your neighborhood if you are reading the local newspaper in your cozy armchairs instead of worrying about scaling up your business. What makes your every single day different is these kinds of small shifts rather than grandiose things.

Korean people works the longest time a week. They work 10 more hours than average working time in the other nations. However, they show comparatively lower work efficiency. It tells us that working time is not equal to work efficiency. Here is what Korean people say, "Who can take a rest better is able to work better" though they do not seem to put their knowledge in action very well. Every student from elementary school students to university students have a short break time between classes because it increases learning efficiency. This is also true for our whole life. If you keep working without your own leisure time, it will decrease your efficiency in work at the end will lower your performance.

Today's people live business. Everyone seems to forget how to work less and have a leisure time. However, working more does not necessarily means living better life. We need not to work more than we should and everyone will know when they do cross a line. We need to abandon too-future-oriented lifestyle, pursue more diversity in our life and work efficiently when we should work.
