Just a few decades ago, it was normal for at least three generations to live under one roof: grandparents, parents, and their children. However, less and less people are choosing to live with their grandparents. These days, nuclear family is the most common type of family found in Korea, and some people are even choosing to live alone. There are several reasons that caused such changes in modern lifestyle.

First of all, the structure of Korea has changed compared to the traditional society. In the past, most of the population relied on farming and it was the main form of labor. Therefore, every member of the family was an important means of workforce. Thus, there were more members in a family. However, not so many people engage in agriculture these days. Only a small percentage of the whole population is farmers, and even that small population use machines rather than human workforce. Therefore, the need for big families has declined.

Secondly, individualism has also contributed to modern lifestyle. One of the utmost important values of modern people is privacy; many people prioritize privacy. However, upon getting married, many aspects of privacy are discarded. Marriage bonds together a husband and a wife; they have to live together and share every part of their lives together. In other words, they have less privacy. Some people may feel uncomfortable with sharing every part of their lives with someone else, which is why they choose to live alone rather than get married.

Moreover, more women are getting higher education and they are choosing to have fewer children, which leads to reduced size of families. In traditional Korea, education of woman was considered rather unnecessary because the traditional role of woman was to be a good mother and an obedient wife. Thus, their role was limited to house chores, assisting their husbands, and rearing children. However, women these days are generally more educated compared to the women in the past. Their social status is getting higher and more and more women are participating in economic activity. Therefore, women have less time to devote to house chores and child rearing, which is why they are having fewer children.

The size of families is getting smaller these days. There are even some people who are choosing to live on their own. Such changes in trend are the result of changing social structure, increased individualism, and better education of woman. Our lifestyle will lose more of its traditions as our society relies less on agriculture, becomes more individualistic, and as more women get well educated.
