Nowadays in Korea, more and more people live alone or with much smaller families compared to the traditional society. The basic form of life style in Korea has been changed too rapidly, there are some reasons and results of this change.
The main cause of these trends is that Korea has been industrialized rapidly. In the traditional society even until 1970, most of Koreans were engaged in agriculture; it needs a lot of hands. So it is natural that the form of families is really big to help each other. However, as Korea became industrialized country many people moved to big cities, the form of family started to change. Because in this kind of industry, it doesn't need a lot of hands compared to agriculture; one's parts are fixed and what we have to do is focusing on our parts.
As the form of family and life style has changed, individualism has become more and more popular and major spirit in Korea rather than community spirit which people had thought most importantly. Koreans still consider community important, but this kind of thinking has been weaker and lighter. And also relationships between people become less important compared to the traditional society.
Moreover, as Korean industry has progressed and one's parts are more fragmented, many people become more self-centered, individualism becomes more popular. It means that the form of family and life style also would be much smaller and individualized as industry. The size of family would be smaller and the members of family would be less. Also, more and more people try to assert their rights as they focus on themselves more. There would be more diverse kinds of family which has not been thought as family form; more single family, homo-sexual family and single mom or dad and so on.
In conclusion, Korea still changes a lot, it means that in the future, not only the form of family but other kinds of things would be more fragmented and individualized such as other countries: U.S.A, England and so on. Of course there are good and bad points in this change, but Koreans should think about this matter deeply and consider it carefully.
