Youmi An/five-paragraph essay/Tue 11am

Many people say life is all about being happy. No matter it is true or not, every person on the earth thrives to be happy throughout their whole life. The most important key to be happy is letting go. People have very critical eyes upon giving up something. However, if the goal of life is being happy, downsized wants resulted from giving up, is the easiest answer that we can come to. Less wants will lead us to happiness. It is not a bad choice when someone's happiness from simply giving up outweighs the time and energy that you should put to make your bigger wants come true.

I had been on the exact opposite side of being happy because my boyfriend refused to quit smoking. Every time I asked him to quit, he said he will do. Not surprisingly, as a result of those innumerous "I will", he is still smoking. It was so frustrated to me that he did not listen to me. I could not escape from depression until I realized he is also a full-grown up and got his own right to decide whether smoke or not. As soon as I exclude 'no smoking' from the long list of the requirements that I want him to follow, I could make the way out of unhappiness. All I did to be happy was to downsize my wants. I think it is not a bad choice

Less wants make happiness. It is very obvious and clear. A child can be happy with a pony. A university student might be happy with a pony. A full grown up cannot be happy with a pony as much as a child if s/he is sane. A small pony just grows into a car, and a house. If someone wants to be happy when there is only a pony, the first thing they can do probably is lower the threshold of happiness down to a pony.

Meanwhile, making someone's wants smaller sometimes poses a lot of challenges. For those of who would never ever allow their partner to smoke, just giving up on it as I did is not the best answer. In such cases, an individual should acquire great patience and competence. They should come up with many wise methods which will make their partners quit smoking. Also, they need to wait patiently until their wish come true. If you do not dare to downsize your desire consequently the cost that you should pay is greater patience and competence.

What you will either downsize desires or enhance patience and competence depends on what you are better at. Since no one wants to be unhappy, an individual has to make decision whether to give up or continue in every moment of life. Continuing is not always the best choice. Do not get obsessed with accomplishing your wants and think about downsizing your wants. You will be happier than when keep going is the only answer.

    1. What I like about this piece of writing is that you found a interesting and fresh cause of the happiness.

    2. Your main point seems to be that letting go off things you’ve wanted brings happiness.

    3. These particular words or lines struck me as powerful: “However, if the goal of life is being happy, downsized wants resulted from giving up, is the easiest answer that we can come to” it comes to me as a lesson from Buddhism.

    4. Some things aren't clear to me. These lines or parts could be improved: “Less wants make happiness. It is very obvious and clear” how about saying “It is very obvious and clear that less wants make more happiness.”?

    5. The one change you could make that would make the biggest improvement in this piece of writing is that some of your words or phrases has false sense, I think. How about changing some words or grammatical components?

Less wants make happiness. According to the scale of an individual’s want, sometimes a little pony turns out to be the whole world, and the other times just a dump animal. This is a very simple theory.
