Yang, MyongHwa / Assignment 4 / Tue 3,4

Do what you want

All individuals have their own criteria for happiness. Some people might think of money as the priority in the list of happiness. To others, spending time with family or friends could be an important factor to be happy. Among these various things, the biggest one to me is doing what I want. When doing something that I love most, I feel really happy and alive in the world. I think that most of the other people are the same as me. Then, why do people feel happy when doing something to like?

First of all, that is because of the passion. Passion is a kind of positive energy from people who are hooked on something. When people do what they want, they usually concentrate on it and pour all their passion. As a result, more positive energy comes out and this leads people to the happiness.

Another reason can be the satisfaction. As mentioned above, people tend to do something passionately that they really love. That means they would try anything without regrets to get what they want. Apart from success or failure, the fact that they do their best makes them satisfies with their work and this satisfaction, in turn, creates private happiness.

Lastly, courage also helps to be happy. Actually, it is not easy for people to do what they want directly because there are so many things to be considered before putting it into practice. So people need the courage to start. Even if it takes a while to have courage, people would realize that they are going forward to the happiness with that courage.

It is said that the happiness is always around us. In other words, people could find their real happiness in a place not far away. In my opinion, doing what people desire is a kind of way to find real and near happiness. If you already know what you want, what about doing it right now to feel happy?

    1. I like the fact that you have specified what aspects of ‘doing what one likes’ leads to happiness. Personally, I never thought about ‘why’ doing what I like makes me happy, though it certainly does. Analyzing the specific aspect of doing what we like is a new and striking approach.

    2. The main point seems to be that, ‘most people feel happy when they do what they like to do’.

    3. “If you already know what you want, what about doing it right now to feel happy?”-This rhetorical question seems to be a nice way to end this essay. It suggests the reader what he/she can do to find happiness. This concluding sentence puts readers into action(to find happiness).

    4. In paragraph 4, the relationship between ‘courage’ and ‘happiness’ is unclear to me. Personally, I think that the main point of this paragraph is that courage leads to action and that the ‘feel of starting something you like’ makes you happy. Then, isn’t more appropriate to say that the feeling itself leads to happiness rather than courage?

    5. As I mentioned on point4, if you could clarify paragraph4, this essay will be clearer.

    1. What I like about this piece of writing is that you found the most basic and essential cause of the happiness; doing what I want to do.

    2. Your main point seems to be that doing what I want to do is the best way to be happy

    3. These particular words or lines struck me as powerful: “If you already know what you want, what about doing it right now to feel happy?” This question made me think about what I’m doing, why I’m doing it and so on.

    4. Some things aren't clear to me. These lines or parts could be improved: Then, why do people feel happy when doing something to like?......did you try to say ‘something they like to do?’ by ‘something to like?’

    5. The one change you could make that would make the biggest improvement in this piece of writing is that you wrote about a one cause of the happiness and explained the reasons for the cause, but the exercise asked to write ‘causes’ of the happiness, not reasons for a cause.
