Park Shin-Young/Assignment 5/Tuesday 11 a.m.

What are the causes of individualism and what kind of effects will they have on society?

Korea is the nation that has a lot of community spirit in the world. Even now, we Koreans still have a tendency to put top priority on groups. But, that pattern is changing. Sales for single households have been skyrocketing, and we can easily see people who enjoy their own life by themselves. Individualism grows to spread out over the most Confucian nation. Let's take a look on causes and effects for that.

First, the rapid inflow of a western culture is the most biggest cause. In the process of economic  progress after the civil-war, it is the fact that Korea has significantly focused on America. It become so serious to follow the american culture. As you may know, characteristics of the culture is centered not on groups but on an individual.

Second, sizes of family has been diminished. Score of years ago, agriculture had a large scale in Korean society, In agricultural society, workforces are the most important part. So, the custom to have children for workforces still remained. But, Korea is not crop-producing country any more. For that reason, we don't have to have many children. That is to say, nuclear families are much more common in Korea. The less family we have, the less responsible we are.

Finally, our life style has become so convenient when it comes to live alone. Contrary to the past, we have so many facilities such as restaurants, cleaners and officetel. We don' need to rely on our families for survival. Also, IT technologies like smartphones or any mobile devices have supported this aspect of change.

In my opinion, our extreme community spirits should be avoided. Each people can live freely. This is a society. Of course, since people are social animals, we people can't live like men in an uninhabited island. But, we don't have to force ourselves to change lifestyles. Like prosperous cultures fall behind in the society at one moment, individual tendency, if needed, could be changed into new aspect of culture.
