< How the respiratory system works >

Did you know that you breathe about 20,000 times in a day? Most people may not know this because breathing is an automatic function of the body. But, since you cannot live without breathing, you should know how it works. Parts of your body involved in it are called the respiratory system. The system includes several organs and plays very important roles. Here is how it works.

The respiratory system consists of all the organs involved in breathing. These include the nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi and lungs. And, the system does two very important roles. First, it delivers oxygen to our bodies, which is essential for us to live. Second, it helps us get rid of carbon dioxide, which is a waste product of our bodies.

When you breathe in, air enters your body through your nose or mouth. Then, it goes down your throat through the larynx and goes into the trachea before entering your lungs. And this upper airway is important because it must always be open for you to be able to breathe. Also, it helps to moisten and warm the air before it reaches to your lungs.

Then, your lungs take oxygen into your body, and you need it for your cells to live and function properly. Plus, they enable us to get rid of carbon dioxide. In other words, a very large amount of blood that is low in oxygen and high in carbon, comes from your heart to your lungs, and then, they take the carbon dioxide out and fill more oxygen so that the blood can be oxygen-rich and deliver the oxygen to your cells and organs.

We cannot live without breathing, so the respiratory system does crucial roles for us to live. Therefore, we should have more knowledge about it and prevent serious respiratory diseases so that we could live healthy lives.
